Funny Approach

Just wanted to share a little tidbit of advice that I read here.

This article talks about using humor to discipline your children. A different way of trying to get your kids to follow the rules, listen and keeping your cool.

Not even a day ofter reading this I had the opportunity to use it.

Hailey has been battling some planters warts and last night she came to me to inform me she found some new ones on her middle toe.

The band aids have worked for us in the past, but this time we wanted to try the McIvor approach and use duct tape to get rid them. Two reasons, first hand knowledge from a relative that it worked for them and the planters warts are at the end of her toe where it was going to be hard to place anything there.

Well when I express this to Hailey she wanted nothing to do with it!

To give you an idea as to how our conversation was going to go.

"Hailey I think we should use the duct tape this time, as the warts are on the tip of your toe and it will be real hard to get a wart band aid to stick"

"No I do not want to use the Duct tape"

"But Hailey do you understand what I mean, it is hard to put a wart band aid at the tip of your toe"

"Yes I understand, but I want to use the band aid"

"Hailey I do not think it is a good idea"

"Can't we just try the band aid, it's my toe right?"

"Yes I understand it is your toe Hailey but the band aid is going to fall off because the wart is on the end of the toe"

"How do you know that it will fall off?"

"Because a band aid has never stayed on the tip of my toe"

"Maybe my toe is better than yours"

"I doubt that"

"I don't want to use duct tape"

"Okay well we just won't use anything then and let the wart grow and grow"

"Maybe if it gets a little bigger a band aid will stick to it"

"No Hailey that is not a good idea"

"But I do not want to use the the Duct tape"

And this would of gone on forever and ever only to end in either of us getting frustrated and angry.

So I took the humorous approach to try and diffuse this. I looked at her and said "If it will help I will wear a piece of duct tape on my leg, if you put on a small piece at the end of your toe."

To my surprise, she says "Okay". So here I am with a square piece of duct tape stuck to the many hairs of my leg, but the situation ended without frustration and anger.

So now this skill has been added to my utility belt and I will definitely be trying to use it more.
